Interventional Radiology in Tanzania

TAMSA is excited to be part of a new Interventional Radiology Program. This was initiated at Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar Es Salaam, approximately 1 year ago.  This project was founded in collaboration with Yale University, New Haven, USA.

The goal of this project is to establish a viable, sustainable, high leading edge Interventional Radiology (IR) training program in Tanzania. On the 4th of October 2019 the IR M.Sc.-Program was approved in Tanzania. After completing the Master in Radiology, doctors will be appropriately trained to practice IR.

IR as a branch of Diagnostic Radiology (DR) offers image-guided, minimally invasive procedures for a broad range of diseases. It benefits patients from every specialty in medicine and surgery. There is an almost unlimited range of procedures, ranging from diagnostic (ie biopsy), drainage (ie nephrostomy, biliary and abscess), placement of feeding tubes, palliation (drainage of ascites or pleural effusions), pain management (ie nerve blocks, vertebroplasty), and tumor treatment (ie, thermal ablation of tumors, chemoembolization).  Enteric stents  are placed in patients with obstruction, avoiding open surgical bypass. There are many vascular applications, such as  angioplasty and stent placement in patients with claudication or critical ischemia. Bleeding can be controlled using various embolization techniques. The advanteges compared to invasive surgery include: reduced costs, in part due to shorter hospitalization, avoids the need for anesthesia, fewer complications, more rapid recovery, including less time away from family and work.

TAMSA is sharing this news with medical students across Tanzania in order to raise awareness,  and to open doors and encourage your participation in this important and growing new field of medicine in Tanzania.

As a student community we plan on having a monthly updates in the newly created Education section on our website.  This will include interesting IR cases. We expect this will facilitate an improved understanding of IR procedures as well as a great way to learn about medical and surgical diseases and therapies in a different way.

Please remember, this is your society and your website, and success depends upon your participation. To start, anyone interested in volunteering for the important job of collecting and collating cases of the month, and other information/events to be posted here. Please contact the President Mohamed Hassan or Nancy Kaur.

There are many other ways to learn and get involved.  You should always feel free to contact your radiology department to find out about more opportunities (ie electives, and research projects).
